I was walking to coffee this morning and passed by a teen from our afterschool program. He was sitting on the steps waiting for someone, anyone to come by. This month is bring a friend to the Y, and he could come for free with a friend. It broke my heart to see this 11 yro sitting in the cold, too shy to ask to come in. I took him inside and we got him set up with a one year membership to come... to the Y anytime he wants.
I know that everyone is busy this time of year and for those able, it's much more fun to purchase toys to give to other programs, but consider the longterm. I was able to provide this teen with a year of basketball, raquetball, and swimming. A year of positive adult role models, someone to always play chess with, and warm place to spend his evenings. I know I'm getting sappy, but consider a gift that will impact a teen for the rest of their lives, not just the next few months. Check out your local YMCA, in Snohomish Co, $34 provides a 12-month membership to a teen.
