THE NEED
Each year more than 800 youth from the Mukilteo community and Puget Sound area shred “The Muk,” our famous 19,000 sq. ft. outdoor skate park. Unfortunately, these youth have nowhere to go during our typical 170 days of inclement weather or rainy days. Our planned indoor skate park will boast a 30-foot mini ramp with 3 to 5 foot sections, as well as incorporate a ledge and smaller bank ramp, in order to provide youth of a variety of abilities the chance to hone their skills in a positive, supervised space year-round.

GOAL & TIMELINE
Our goal is to raise $25,000 in donations and in-kind pledges of materials and labor before August 31, 2013. If successful, we will begin construction in early fall of 2013, with a goal of hosting a grand opening before Thanksgiving 2013.

About the YMCA of Snohomish County

Here in Snohomish County, the Y has been serving and strengthening our communities since 1901. We've been here through economic booms and busts, wartime and peace, and social upheavals both subtle and life-changing. Our movement is made up of people of all ages and from every walk of life, all working side-by-side to ensure that everyone, regardless of gender, income or background, has the opportunity to live life to its fullest.

We value caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility, and everything we do stems from this. Our staff and volunteers are kids, parents, grandparents, neighbors, and local leaders who are all personally committed to understanding what our neighborhoods need. Together, we use our knowledge to develop stronger, more integrated communities, provide support for people and families, and promote positive change overall.

Mission
The YMCA of Snohomish County is composed of people of all ages, ethnic backgrounds, and religious affiliations united in sharing the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility through programs that build strong kids, strong families, and strong communities.

Hi there! My name is Kristin and I love skateboarding.

I've never been your average girl. From climbing trees with my shirt off, to wearing all my brothers old clothes, to playing football at recess, I've always been intrigued by doing whatever the boys did.

So, when all my guy friends bought skateboards in 6th grade, I had to try it for myself. It seemed skateboarding was a natural step on my course to destroy all gender norms.

Within months, I knew this wasn't just a phase for me. I quit nearly every sport to dedicate all my time to skateboarding, much to my parents dismay. Every dry day after school, you could find me bombing down 3rd street, jumping over every sewer, in an effort to get down to the skate park as fast as I could.

However, the problem was that there weren't enough dry days to satisfy my itch to skate. Many days I was forced to skate by myself in my garage, or watch skate videos on the couch.

As I got older and my friends got their driver's licenses, we started driving down to Skate Barn- a 50,000 square foot indoor Skate Park in Renton. It was nearly an hour away in traffic, but quickly became our favorite place to go right after school. I remember learning countless tricks, meeting some of my best friends, and sweating profusely for hours on end. It wasn't my favorite place just that it was incredibly huge, or because it had cool features. It was my favorite place to go because we could always go there. It was like home.

As the Skate Park Director here at the Mukilteo YMCA, I am in a unique position to create a similar experience for the young people I serve. My goal is to provide the same sense of "home" for my kids at The Muk. Just like I had Skate Barn, they too deserve a space to practice all year, progress their abilities, and gain confidence.

We have a world-class skate park when the weather cooperates, and the world's ugliest wading pool when the rain comes. Our kids deserve better. Let's work together to provide an all-year skate facility!
