I have the privilege of being the Director of Membership at the Monroe Sky Valley YMCA for the past 4 years and in this time my life has changed in so many ways. I get to see the impact the Y has on this community and its members every single day. The power of impact is in each our hands. When you choose to make a difference that’s when your life changes too.

Last year, my then 9 year old son Max and I volunteered to be a Buddy at a Miracle league game on Saturday afternoon. Miracle league is a baseball program for kids with special needs. The Monroe Y runs 3 games every Saturday morning for kids who wouldn’t otherwise get the chance to play baseball. Every child who plays get assigned a Buddy, this is where Max and I got to be involved. The #1 goal of the buddy is to insure that every child is safe on the field and has a fantastic time.

Being completely honest with you, I was a little apprehensive and Max was a little nervous as well. We had never been a buddy before and didn’t know what to expect. We got to buddy up with a young man with severe autism who loved to play baseball. This young man just fell in love with Max and followed Max everywhere. Max was so good with him, helping him with his mitt, redirecting his eyes to watch for balls and overall keeping him safe. We had a wonderful time that day.

We volunteered our time because we felt like we had so much to give, instead what happened was this young man gave us more than we ever could have imagined. We left that day so thankful for the time we got to share and for the lessons we learned. Simple lessons like slow down, look at the beautiful wild flowers on the field (When you take a minute to really look), and throwing your hat on the roof of the dugout is actually pretty fun. Life is simple, try not to complicate it.

I am raising money for my cause, the Y! Join me and make an impact today!

Every day, we work side-by-side with our neighbors to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income, or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.

We believe that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together. That's why, at the Y, strengthening community is our cause.

With a focus on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility, the Y works to nurture the potential of children and teens, improve the nation's health and well-being, and give back and support our neighbors.

At the Y, no child, family, or adult is turned away. We recognize that for communities to succeed, everyone must be given the opportunity to be healthy, confident, connected, and secure.
